Do you live in one of the most dangerous cities in Georgia?
We all watch the news and see reports on Facebook of the latest crimes that happen in our hometowns. But it can be hard to tell at a big picture level how dangerous our town actually is.
No one wants to feel unsafe, and statistically speaking, odds are that where you live is most likely relatively safe. In order to help the good people of Georgia — and anyone looking to move to Georgia — know just how close they are to danger, we took data from the annual FBI report and did some serious analysis.
So what is the most dangerous city in Georgia? After analyzing 107 cities in Georgia, East Point takes the top spot as the most dangerous city in Georgia based on the most recent FBI data.

How we determined the most dangerous cities in Georgia for 2019?
Every year the FBI release two crime datasets, a preliminary dataset limited to the biggest cities in the country, followed by a more detailed release at the end of the year.
For our analysis, we focused on the JUST released 2017 data, specifically the 2017 Crime In The United States Report. We will update the results when data becomes available in September 2019.
So what criteria did we use? Have a look:
- Violent Crimes Per Capita
- Property Crimes Per Capita
In order to make the analysis as apples to apples as possible, we only considered cities over 5,000 in population. That left us with 107 cities in Georgia.
We then ranked each city from 1 to 107 for the two criteria with a #1 ranking being the most dangerous for the particular criteria.
Next, we averaged the two rankings into one “Dangerous Index”.
Finally, we ranked every city on the “Dangerous Index” with the lowest index being the most dangerous in Georgia — East Point.
Read on for a detailed look at the 10 most dangerous cities in Georgia.
The 10 Most Dangerous Places To Live In Georgia For 2019
East Point comes in 1st on our list for the most dangerous places in Georgia. Just southwest of Atlanta, the city beats its bigger neighbor when it comes to crime.
Residents of East Point have a 1 in 7.8 chance of being the victim of a crime. For reference, the most dangerous place in Virginia had about a 1 in 15 chance of being the victim of a crime.
East Point ranks as the 2nd highest city for property crime per capita which contributes to its high chance of crime.
Unlike the rest of the country, Union City has actually seen a rise in crime, both violent and property, over the past three years.
As one City-Data user put it, “Union City is so-so at best.”
College Park, where crime happens in Georgia.
It’s important to remember that the FBI bases its crime data on where the crimes occurred and the police department for College Park covers parts of Clayton and Fulton County associated with the city and not just the city proper.
That being said, Ludacris, 2 Chainz, and Jung Joc all came from College Park and they don’t sing about rainbows and butterflies
Tifton is another county seat that also represents its county as one of the most dangerous places in Georgia.
Coming in at 4th on our list, Tifton mixes (relatively) middle of the pack violent crime and property crime without (relatively) excelling in either one.
We say relative because while its crime rates are middle of the pack for the top ten, they are still high for Georgia as a whole.
Located in eastern Georgia, Hapeville is one of the smaller cities to appear on this list.
Hapeville has achieved some impressive improvements in its crime rate in recent years, with violent crime falling by 34% from 2015-17, and property crime falling by about half as much.
Still, folks living in Hapeville had a 1 in 8.5 chance of being the victim of theft or arson in 2017, which is pretty unacceptable.
The 104th most populated city in the state, Eastman is considered the cultural center of northeastern Georgia.
It is also the center of quite a bit of crime, but at least Eastmanns are working on fixing it — violent crime was reduced by 4% between 2015-17, and property crime by 5%.
Still, residents had around a 1 in 145 chance of being the victim of violence and about a 1 in 10.8 chance of being the victim of theft or arson in 2017.
Coming in as the 7th most dangerous city in Georgia is Albany.
While violent crime has been steadily dropping in recent years, with a 10% total drop in violent crime from 2015-17, property crime went up by nearly the same rate during this interval.
That left residents of Albany a 1 in 1217.8 chance of being the victim of a property crime in 2017, and a 1 in 88 chance of being the victim of violence.
Griffin is another county seat that also represents its county as one of the most dangerous cities in Georgia.
Griffin’s ranking for violent crime and property were 10th and 17th, respectively.
Griffin is a bit off the beaten path about 50 miles south of Atlanta. Yet it still manages its fair share of crime.
In this case, Douglasville finished as the 9th most dangerous place in the Peach State.
Violent crime is an issue as the city ranks 16th overall for violent crime, while also ranking 14th for property crime.
Adel ranks 22nd in violent crime, but 9th overall in property crime to place as the 10th most dangerous city in Georgia.
To put that in perspective, you have a 1 in 14.8 chance of being a victim of a property crime in Adel. That makes property crimes much more common in Adel than the safest city, Milton.
