Methodology: How we calculated the murder capitals of Mississippi

While there are surveys and public polls on what cities in a state are the most dangerous, we didn’t want to rely on speculation and opinion. Instead, we looked at the hard numbers from the FBI’s last year of reporting. Specifically, we analyzed the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report which summarizes the number of murders that may happen in each city per year.

We only looked every single city in Mississippi for which FBI data was available for the most recent FBI Crime In The United States. That left us with 28 cities to rank.

Finally, we averaged the two scores into an index:

  • The raw number of murders in each city
  • The murders per person

We felt as if a small place with 2,500 people and two murders makes it a lot more dangerous than a city of 25,000 people with three murders. Any ties went to the larger city.

This article is an opinion based on facts. It is our tenth time ranking the most places with the most murders per capita in Mississippi and is updated for 2023.

  1. Natchez, MS? With a population of 15,000 residents and 12 murders in 2018, it is leading the nation statistically at 79 murders per 100,000 residents. Murder capitol of Mississippi, The South and the United States of America.

    1. Just curious as to how these numbers are calculated and what cities are looked at. As mentioned, Natchez, MS had 12 murders in 2018 with a population at around 14,000. Port Gibson had 11 murders by May in 2016 with a population of around 5,000…

  2. That picture of gautier is inaccurate. Why not leave something like this to someone from Mississippi? I live in the #7 murder town, Ocean Springs. It’s basically Fallujah.

  3. How is is Hatteisburg not on here at all?? I’ve lost count of the murders since the end of Dec. 2019 til now. Can you see how many there has been?
