Do you know a potential cheater? Odds are that if you live in one of the cities below, you do. At least, you probably know someone who created an account on Ashley Madison, or had an account set up in their name by a friend or colleague.
There were over 32 million accounts created on Ashley Madison, and the going consensus is that almost all of them were created by men. In New York state alone, there were over 837,000 accounts created, total. That’s a lot, considering that the entire population of the state is 19 million.
After analyzing 434 cities, this is the list of the cities with the highest percentage of Ashley Madison accounts in the state of New York:
- Locust Valley
- Schenectady
- New York City
- Akron
- Albany
- Holtsville
- Long Island City
- LaGrange
- Melville
- Attica
Many of these are smaller cities in New York that have a high percentage of its residents with an account on Ashley Madison. Which means, in theory, they have a high number of people looking to discreetly hook up with a woman.

How We Determined The Cheaters In New York
Want to know who is attempting to cheat? Go directly to the source of people actively trying to cheat — Ashley Madison users.
We used the Ashley Madison database to count how many accounts were created in each zip code. We are saying “accounts” and not “people” because it is possible to create dummy accounts assigned to a city or to have multiple accounts. However, we believe the number of accounts to be a solid proxy for the number of people trying to cheat.
We then matched each zip code to its corresponding city. If a zip code falls into more than one city, the accounts registered in that zip code were applied to each city.
Finally, we used an estimate for the population of the zip codes to identify the number of cheaters per capita.
After identifying the number of cheaters per capita in a city, we ranked each place from highest number of cheaters per capita to lowest. The place with the most cheaters per capita “earned” the title of cheating central of New York.

1. Locust Valley
Percentage of city potentially cheating: 17%
Wow, Locust Valley men. You’ve apparently been busy. Almost 1 in 5 of the population had an address registered on Ashley Madison. When you look at the demographics of Locust Valley, you can see why.
The average income in Locust Valley is $80,000 a year, and the average home costs $531,000. So, apparently, we can assume that lots of wealthy men from Locust Valley registered an account on Ashley Madison.
Locust Valley is a CDP located on the western tip of Long Island. There were a total of 1,038 cheating accounts created here.
2. Schenectady
Percentage potentially cheating: 16%
Schenectady is an interesting situation, data wise. It’s a very blue collar place (not wealthy by any stretch), where there are a much higher percentage of women in the city than men.
Perhaps that’s one reason so many men here had registered accounts? Not enough women in town to talk to? In any event, you might be surprised to hear that there were more than 20,000 accounts created here.
3. New York City
Percentage potentially cheating: 15.1%
No one is surprised that there were a high number of potential cheaters in New York City. You have a ton of rich, successful men who work and live here.
The percentage of New York City residents that’s married is 39%, which is far lower than the national average. The percent that’s divorced is 8%, which is slightly lower than the national average.
4. Akron
Percentage potentially cheating: 15%
For such a tiny place, Akron had a sheer high number of accounts registered. On a per capita level, it had one of the highest in the state.
Akron is a blue collar city located in the suburbs of Buffalo. The divorce rate is really high here; more than 14% of the population is divorced. Almost half of the population is married in Akron.
5. Albany
Percentage potentially cheating: 13.7%
It’s probably a good thing that only 26% of Albany residents are actually married when you look at the numbers of cheating accounts that were set up here. Almost 15,000 Albany area accounts were created on Ashley Madison.
The capital of New York is far below the state average in income levels and home prices. And there are 5% more women than men here.
6. Holtsville
Percentage potentially cheating: 13.6%
Holtsville is a pretty wealthy area on Long Island where the percentage of married residents is about 55% – which is one of the highest married rates on this list.
That means there are lots of wealthy, married men in the Holtsville area who are curious about cheating on their wives.
7. Long Island City
Percentage potentially cheating: 12.9%
Long Island City is the westernmost residential and commercial neighborhood of Queens, where 51% of the population is married, and 8% are divorced.
It’s fairly expensive to live here, and it has a thriving arts community.
8. LaGrange
Percentage potentially cheating: 12.2%
LaGrange is a fairly wealthy community about an hour and a half north of Manhattan. Here, 64% of the population is already married, which is far higher than any other city we looked at. And, only 5% of the families here are divorced, which is also far below the other cities we looked at.
So what you have in LaGrange is a ton of married men who had registered accounts on Ashley Madison from LaGrange.
9. Melville
Percentage potentially cheating: 10.2%
Melville residents are simply loaded. Located on Long Island, the families who live here bring in more than $132,000 a year, and homes cost more than $900,000.
Like LaGrange, there are a lot of married people in Melville, and hardly any of them are divorced. So what you have, basically, are lots of rich, married white men who registered accounts on Ashley Madison.
10. Attica
Percentage potentially cheating: 10.2%
Attica is a small place south of Buffalo that’s pretty average when you consider income levels. And even though the population is so small, there were 515 Ashley Madison accounts registered with an Attica home address.
That’s like 1 in 10 residents. Wow.
54% of the population in Attica is married, and 9% are divorced – both of which are about on par with state averages.

If you’re measuring the locations in New York where there are a high number of Ashley Madison accounts registered per capita, and we can assume that people registering on the site are exploring the idea to cheat, then this is an accurate list.
