When the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of same-sex marriages, America generally, and the gay community specifically, celebrated. Same-sex marriages, and the gay and lesbian movement is more mainstream than ever.

While the national discussion has been brought to the forefront, at the state level, conversations continue.

Did you know that an estimated 0.34% of Wisconsin residents is gay? That ranks 33 in the nation. That means there are a total of 129,000 gay households in The Badger State.

Our goal with this post is to use data and science to determine the gayest cities in Wisconsin.

After analyzing 221 cities with over 1,000 households, we’ve determined these are The Gayest Cities in Wisconsin:

New London is a city in Outagamie and Waupaca Counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Founded in 1851, the population was 7,295 at the 2010 census. Of this, 5,685 were in Waupaca County, and 1,640 were in Outagamie County. The city has a Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Irish Fest, and week-long festivities, when the city’s name is changed to “New Dublin” for the week.

Fitchburg is a city in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 25,260 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is a suburb of Madison and is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fitchburg consists of a mix of suburban neighborhoods closer the border with the city of Madison, commercial and industrial properties, and more rural properties in the southern portion of the city. Despite its status as an incorporated city, some rural parts of Fitchburg still lack certain municipal services such as sewer, water, and natural gas.

Suamico is a village in Brown County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 11,346 at the 2010 census. Suamico is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area, and contains the neighborhood community of Flintville.

How do you determine the best cities for same-sex households in Wisconsin?

In order to rank the gayest cities in Wisconsin, we used the 2011-2016 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census. We looked at:

  • Percentage of all households that are unmarried, same sex partners

We limited the analysis to non-CDPs that have over 1,000 households.

We ranked each place from 1 to 221 with the city containing the highest percentage of unmarried, same sex partners households being the most gay.

In the end, Park Falls ended up being the the most gay place with 3.4% gay households.
